The upper terrace of the Torre del Homenaje is considered the viewpoint of Huéscar, from where a spectacular panoramic view of the whole city can be seen, offering the opportunity to better understand the reasons why the emir Ismail I decided to build the new town in this location.
It also provides an insight into the defensive system on an urban and territorial scale, since, being a border area, a large defensive belt of watchtowers was erected with the aim of providing communication and protection for the frontiers. The monuments of Huéscar can also be seen, as well as one of the most ambitious hydraulic engineering projects of the 18th century, the Canal de Carlos III.

Úskar Castle
Highlights Route, Moorish Route
From the viewpoint of the Torre del Homenaje, we can observe the Sierra de la Encantada and delve into the origins of the town of Huéscar, as there was once a rocky castle known as Castillo de Úskar.
Its origin is Almohad and dates back to the end of the 12th century. It was in the hands of the Order of Santiago and, along with others, served to protect the borders. However, on his arrival the Emir Ismail I decided to destroy the castle, using artillery for the first time, and to create a new town in an area protected by mountains but flatter and more fertile, watered by the waters of the Barbatas river: the present-day Huéscar.

Watchtowers
Highlights Route, Moorish Route
Due to the strategic and frontier position of the town of Huéscar during the Nazari reign, it became necessary to reinforce the security of the town and the territories belonging to it. For this reason, and thanks to the favourable orography, a network of watchtowers was built with the aim of communicating with each other in the face of possible threats from enemy armies, and thus guaranteeing the security of the town.
Most of them are still in good condition, with the Atalaya de Ferrer, the Atalaya de Almorox, the Atalaya del Muerto, the Atalaya de la Encantada and the Atalaya de Botardo in the Huéscar area.
